Languages other than English (LOTE)
The Languages program offers students the opportunity to develop the skills required to communicate effectively in another language, a skill we believe is vital to citizenry in a global society. The College offers two languages - one European language (French) and one Asian language (Japanese).
Year 8
Students in Year 8 are required to select either French or Japanese to study. They have language classes twice a week for the entire year. The courses foster communication and cultural skills through the four language modes of reading, writing, viewing, speaking and listening.
Year 9 to 12
From Year 9, students can choose to continue with the language they studied in Year 8, or switch to another optional subject. The College offers a unique program for those students that continue with their language study through to Year 10, whereby they can obtain the nationally recognised TAFE Certificate II in Applied Languages. Students who continue with Japanese or French in Year 11 and 12 are able to complete the TAFE Certificate III in Applied Languages as well as use Japanese or French to contribute to their ATAR.
Overseas Experiences
Students may have the opportunity to spend time overseas in France or Japan on school exchange trips. These trips are generally held biennially for students in Year 10 to 12, are approximately two weeks long and are well balanced programs with a good range of school and tourist activities. They are an excellent opportunity for students to apply what they have been studying in the classroom practically, as well as experience first hand the reality of being a stranger in a foreign land, and how they can use that special status to both bless and be blessed.
