Being 14 by Madonna King gives great insight into the world of Year 9 girls.
Academic stress, parties, alcohol, peer pressure, and (a big one) social media: the book covers it all. Madonna King is a journalist and while her book is research-based, it is very easy to read. It explores many concerns common to parents and teachers of Year 9 girls across Australia. Ms King targets parents and mothers in particular, dedicating the final chapter to the mother-daughter relationship. The book is frank and clear, offering very helpful advice to parents.
I highly recommend Being 14 – Helping Fierce Teens Become Awesome Women and have bought copies for the Middle School leadership team and Year 9 DAVE teachers.
The eBook can be downloaded at half the price of the print version. A sample version includes the contents page and one and a half chapters for free. It also tempts you to read on.
