We are looking forward to an exciting year of making music at Swan. All students are invited to join a choir (everyone can sing!) or an instrumental group if they have the required skills.

The rehearsal times for all of Swan’s music groups are listed below. Students who learn music through the school are required to be in the appropriate choir or performing group for their instrument. Details about the various groups on offer are also outlined below.

Rehearsals will start in Week 3

Students may come along for the first three weeks of rehearsals to see if the ensemble is suitable for them, after which all members will be asked to sign a commitment form to the group, so we know who is a member. Anyone interested in joining one of the groups is asked to come and speak to any of the music staff to get more information.

Music Camp (6-8 March)

There will be a Music Camp from 6-8 March and all students involved in the following groups are invited to attend. It will be three days of rehearsing, team building, workshops and having great fun together. The groups attending are the Middle and Senior School Choirs, Swan Concert Band, Jazz Band, Swan String Ensemble, Praise Crew and Senior Drum Corp. Get involved and come on camp!

Instrumental Music Lessons

All students are welcome to apply for instrumental music lessons. These lessons are delivered by our team of professionals and payment is made directly to them for lessons. Swan offers lessons on all the common instruments, both orchestral and popular. An application form that outlines the costs and commitments is available on SEQTA Engage (under ‘Documents).

The cost of lessons has increased very slightly in 2019 to $36 per individual 30-minute lesson and $18 per 30-minute group lesson.

Payment for instrumental lessons is due by Week 4 of the term. Please be prompt with payments as our tutors rely on this.

Choirs

Everyone can sing and all are welcome to join the choir for your age group. Singing together is fun and develops strong friendships and musical skills.

String Ensembles

All students learning an orchestral string instrument should be in either the Junior School String Ensemble or the Swan String Ensemble (Year 7-12). Playing in a performing group brings meaning to the lessons and gives more purpose. As well as being fun, it presents opportunities for performances too.

Concert Band

Those students who started in the Blast Off Band last year are now promoted to the Swan Concert Band. A new Year 5 Blast Off Band will commence later this year. Any student in the school who is learning either Brass, Woodwind or Percussion is welcome to join the Concert Band – come and talk to Mr Raymond.

Jazz Band

The Jazz Band is for more advanced instrumentalists. Students who play the required instrument at an appropriate standard are invited by the Head of Instrumental Music to participate. If you think this is you – please come and talk to Mr Raymond.

Drum Corp

Our drum tutor Mr Taylor takes our two drum corps. These groups perform at many school events and create a fabulous atmosphere. The Junior Drum Corp is for students in Year 6 and 7, and the Senior Drum Corp is for Years 8-12.

Guitar Ensemble

Our fantastic guitar tutor Mr Thomson is starting a guitar ensemble aimed at Middle School Guitarists. This is a great way to develop guitar skills and learn from one of Perth’s best guitarists. Any junior school students wishing to be involved may speak to Mr Thomson for consideration.

Praise Crew

This is our Middle School Worship Band. This group learns contemporary worship songs to then play and lead at school worship sessions. In 2018 this group led the school singing at the Awards Night in the Perth Concert Hall. Any Middle School student is welcome to be a part of this group.
