Congratulations to Samantha (Year 7), Christina (Year 7), Thomas (Year 10) and Byron (Year 10) for bringing in the Languages Champions Trophy to Swan Christian College in the Modern Languages Teachers’ Association WA (MLTAWA) Side by Side Languages Competition 2019.

Both teams came first in the state in their categories of Year 7-8 Japanese and Year 9-10 Japanese out of a total of 60 entries in eight languages.

In the competition, two students of a similar age sit or stand side by side and hold a conversation by asking and answering questions about any topic using familiar language that has recently been explored in class. The students have to use the language in a natural, non-scripted way in a new context with an unfamiliar speaker or an unpredictable question order, demonstrating real fluency in a particular communicative situation. Our Year 7 students asked each other questions about hobbies and family, and the Year 10 students discussed holiday activities and planned an outing to a movie.

The students and their parents, together with the College Japanese Teachers Mrs Knoblich, Mrs Howard and Miss Kamizuru, attended an Award Ceremony on Monday 23 October at Rossmoyne Senior High School to receive individual certificates for the students and a glass trophy for the College. The audience was addressed by Milanna Heberle, Principal Rossmoyne Senior High School and the Honorable Pierre Yang MLC, Member for the South Metropolitan Region (representing the Minister for Education and Training, the Honorable Sue Ellery).

All students who took part in the school-based auditions were invited to a pizza party to celebrate our success in the competition as well as the huge improvements the students would have made in the Japanese speaking while taking part. Congratulations to you all!
