Debating is back at Swan Christian College. We are excited to begin a new year of debating with a strong focus on building confidence, communication skills, and enjoyment in a supportive environment.
At Swan Christian College, our CHARIS values guide all that we do. The first of these – Courage – will be a priority for the Rookie Debating Club as students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, find their voice, and speak with confidence and conviction.
The Rookie Debating Club is open to students in Years 7 to 10 who are new to debating or looking to develop their skills. This year’s focus will be on learning the foundations of debating through practice, feedback, and friendly in‑school competitions, with the aim of potentially moving towards Interhouse debating later in the year.
Through debating, students will:
- Build confidence in public speaking
- Develop critical thinking and structured reasoning
- Learn persuasive communication
- Work collaboratively in teams
- The club commenced in Week 4 this term meeting one morning per week from 8:00–8:45 am, alternating between Wednesday A and Thursday B.
As students grow in confidence and ability, we will consider participation in external competitions later in the year.
If your child is interested, please provide consent via Consent2Go and encourage them to sign up through student debating. Contact Miss Gillian Erasmus if you have any questions.
We look forward to seeing students grow in courage and confidence through debating this year.
