Our Year 11 English students recently visited the Primary School to support the Year 5s with their narrative writing. They focused on developing effective settings within the writing framework, while also giving the Year 5 students the opportunity to read their writing aloud, talk through their ideas, and receive feedback from an older peer.
As part of this “Writing Buddy” session, the Year 11 students listened carefully, highlighted a strength in each piece, and supported the Year 5 students in improving one or two sentences. This provided a valuable opportunity for the younger students to build confidence in their writing, while the older students developed their mentoring and editing skills.
It was a wonderful experience for both groups. The Year 11s thoroughly enjoyed stepping into a teaching role, offering feedback, and engaging with the younger students’ work.
Thank you, Miss McChesney, and the Year 5 students, for providing such a valuable and purposeful learning opportunity.
