With the Year 9s in Term 2, we studied a unit on bread. Students learnt about the history of bread, the varieties found around the world, the different raising agents, and how oven temperature affects the final result. They tasted a range of savoury and sweet breads and considered their physical and sensory properties.
Throughout the term, students produced many delicious savoury and sweet breads. The smell of bread filled the cooking room, creating a sense of warmth and comfort. For their major assessment, students designed and produced their own bread in creative ways. Among the breads presented were garlic bread twists, cinnamon scrolls, raspberry and white chocolate scrolls, pretzels, focaccia, and more. I was very proud of what the students achieved.
In John 6:35 we read, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” Students were reminded that a person can survive a long time on only bread and water. By equating himself with bread, Jesus was saying that he is essential for life. The life Jesus refers to is not physical life, but eternal life. The bread that we eat is physical bread that perishes, but the bread that Jesus offers is spiritual bread that brings eternal life. This truth is comforting, just like the smell of freshly baked bread.
