At Swan Christian College, we always strive to bring the curriculum to life. We believe in “boots on the ground” learning, which is why we are thrilled to announce the launch of our very own Sustainable Vegetable Patch.
A Cross-Curricular Collaboration
This isn’t just a garden; it’s a living classroom. Students have already volunteered to “adopt a bed,” committing to the ongoing care and upkeep of our crops. The project has quickly become a hub for various subjects:
- Year 9 Business: Students conducted a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) to evaluate the project’s viability.
- Food Technology: We are working closely with the department to grow high-demand ingredients, with fresh herbs at the top of the list.
- Year 7-10 Humanities (HASS): Our Year 7s are connecting the patch to their study of the water cycle, Year 9s are exploring food security, and Year 10s are investigating how human-induced changes impact environmental sustainability.
Sustainability in Action
Our ultimate goal is self-sufficiency. From a Business and Economics perspective, the garden serves as a real-world model of how organizations adapt to changing market conditions and resource management. We are even looking toward the future with plans to expand the area to include chickens!
Heartfelt Thanks
This project would not have been possible without the dedication of our wonderful staff:
- Dr Pretorius for envisioning the project.
- Mr Wakefield for his hard work in assembling the planter boxes and installing a sustainable irrigation system using harvested rainwater.
- Mrs Haramis-Niaoris for her expert guidance in establishing our new worm farm.
We look forward to updating the community as our first harvest of herbs and vegetables begins to flourish. Watch this space!
