As part of our Talk for Writing, we discovered a poetry unit and had a go at becoming poets! We explored spine poems:Â a really fun style of poetry that is perfect for budding writers.
Here’s how it works: students started by choosing an animal, character, or person they love, then come up with five nouns ( words that name a feature of their subject) – think things like fur, claws, or roar for a lion! These five words form the “spine” of the poem, and students then build each one into its own line.
They kick things off with a sentence introducing their subject and wrap the whole poem up with a question or statement at the end.
The results were so creative!
Have a look at some of our amazing poems!
