Not All Heroes Wear Capes

Rowing Olympic medallist and cousin of one of our Year 2 students, Jack Cleary, visited Swan Christian College for our recent Year 2 Assembly on the topic of ‘heroes’. Addressing the assembly, Jack said that not all heroes wear capes: “They are your teachers, your coaches and of course your mums and dads.”

As part of the assembly, students talked about Superheroes, Christian Heroes, Olympic Heroes and everyday heroes.

Jack’s part in the assembly was a surprise to most of the students who thought that hosting him was just “so cool”. He brought the Olympic bronze medallion he won at the Tokyo Olympics for the men’s quadruple scull and allowed the Year 2s to try it on.

The students were inspired by his passion and dedication, and clearly impressed that they had an Olympian in their midst!

  • “I wanted to know how heavy the bronze medal is and got to hold it to see for myself.” – Patrick T
  • “It was cool to have a real Olympics person at school because not many people get to see one.” – Grace M

The assembly topic had been woven into the students’ learning throughout the term. During Talk 4 Writing, students learned how to write Information Reports and were introduced to the character Hawkboy, a new superhero (Hawkboy was even spotted and caught by some of our Year 2 students later in the term – but they agreed to keep his identity hidden). In Bible, students explored heroes in the Bible and discovered real-life Christian heroes. And of course, the Olympics made their way into many areas of the classroom!

We would like to express our thanks to Jack for making our students’ day, to Year 2 student Levi’s mum for arranging the visit and to all the students and teachers for their work on this memorable assembly.
