Students in Middle School are learning to apply their understanding of mathematical concepts to real life in project based learning. Year 7 were given the task of measuring up their bedroom and creating a scaled model of their room.
They were then asked what furniture and other items they would like to have in their room. Finally the cost of painting the room and replacing the floor coverings was calculated to come up with a total cost for the renovation.
It was amazing to see the creativity of the students in deciding what materials they would use to create their models and the intricate details that went into constructing the components that filled their rooms. It was an interesting way for the students to work on calculating area and scale sizes while including their own artistic flair.
