The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Christian Schools

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming an everyday part of our world – from voice assistants to educational tools that can generate ideas, summarise information, and offer personalised learning pathways. In our Christian school context, it’s important to reflect not only on ‘how’ we use AI, but also on ‘why’ we use it, ensuring our approach aligns with biblical wisdom and our commitment to nurturing the whole child.

AI is powerful, but it is not neutral – it reflects the data and biases it has been trained on. As such, its use must be guided by Christian values of truth, integrity, and love for others. The Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 4:8 provide a valuable lens: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.” This reminds us that our use of technology should lead to what is good and life-giving.

AI can be a helpful educational partner, offering tailored resources to meet a student’s learning pace and style. It can support revision, provide practice exercises, and help explain difficult concepts in new ways. In this sense, AI can make learning more accessible and inclusive, giving students tools to flourish academically.

Yet, we must also recognise the limitations and risks. An over-reliance on AI can reduce opportunities for original thought, deep problem-solving, and the joy of creative struggle. True learning is more than finding the right answer quickly; it’s about developing the wisdom to discern, the patience to persevere, and the humility to learn from mistakes. Proverbs 2:6 reminds us: “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” AI can provide information, but wisdom comes from God.

While AI can spark curiosity, there is a danger that its instant answers might diminish the wonder of exploration and discovery. Creativity often grows from wrestling with uncertainty, experimenting, and imagining – all of which require space, time, and human reflection. Our goal is to ensure technology enhances, rather than replaces, these vital experiences.

At Swan Christian College, as we begin to use AI more and more, we are committed to being responsible – as a servant to learning, not as a substitute for thinking. We hope to guide students to use it ethically, critically, and creatively, and ultimately in the pursuit of God’s wisdom.
