In memory of Mr Donald Smith, a beloved teacher who shared his passion for chess with so many students, Swan Christian College has renamed the shield awarded to the winning house of the Interhouse Chess Tournament as the Donald Smith Memorial Shield.
Mr Smith not only encouraged a love for the game but also mentored students who went on to become chess champions. His enthusiasm and dedication left a lasting impact, and this renaming is a fitting tribute to a teacher and friend who inspired so many.
Mr Smith’s impact at the College stretched far beyond the classroom. A former missionary in China and a dedicated educator, he lived out his faith in service to others, shaping countless lives with his kindness, wisdom, and encouragement. His love for chess was more than just a game—it was a way to mentor, challenge, and uplift students, some of whom went on to become champions.
His colleagues described him as a giant in Christian education, a man of unwavering faith who always took the time to share the gospel and invest in others. His influence will continue through this tribute, ensuring his legacy of dedication and mentorship lives on in the College community for years to come.
Through this honour, his legacy in the College community will continue for years to come.
