We are pleased to announce that Naomi C in Year 8 has been accepted into the Code Crush program hosted by Murdoch University this June. Naomi was encouraged to apply by her Interactive Digital Technology teacher, Mr Mathew Woodbine, who recognised her enthusiasm and potential in the field.
Code Crush is an exciting initiative run by Murdoch University, designed to inspire and empower young female students from across Western Australia. Originally created by Professor Deepak Khazanchi at the University of Nebraska Omaha, the program is being delivered in Perth for the first time, with Murdoch University proudly adapting and hosting the event locally.
Naomi will join a group of 30 female students from Years 8–9 for a series of immersive workshops, social events and industry excursions. Across the program, students will connect with leading professionals in the IT sector, gaining hands-on experience and exposure to real-world applications of technology.
Speakers and facilitators will include Kate Kirwin (2024 WA Young Australian of the Year, CEO, She Codes), Michelle Sandford (Microsoft), Matt Schneider (Founder, Optika Solutions), Dan Haagman (CEO, Chaleit), and Vannessa van Beek (2024 Women in Security Award Winner), among others. Students will also enjoy visits to sponsoring companies such as Immersive Technologies, giving them practical insight into future career paths in IT.
In her application, Naomi shared her passion for technology, writing:
“The program would benefit me especially in pursuing my professional career and to get my university degree.
The event would expose me to relevant workshops that would hone my skills and interests regarding coding. Also, collaborating and interacting with other co-participants and experts can also nurture the interests that I have for this program.
During my primary days, I asked my parents for a coding book which later immersed me into the world of digital sciences.
Recently, I also joined an aviation workshop held at Jandakot Airport by Sky Careers. The said workshop lasted for two days which taught participants about aerodynamics, engines and aircraft simulations. Events like this awaken my inquisitive mind about the significance of having great knowledge and understanding about sciences, technology and mathematics.”
We congratulate Naomi on this wonderful opportunity and look forward to hearing about her experience as she represents the College in Code Crush.
