Public and Religious Holidays: A Time for Rest and Reflection

“PR Holidays” is perhaps a curious title. PR traditionally stands for public relations – the strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organisations and the public. In this case, however, PR can also represent Public and Religious holidays celebrated throughout the calendar year in Western Australia.

Western Australia observes a variety of statewide public holidays each year, including national commemorations, state-specific occasions, and Christian religious celebrations. In addition, there are regional show days and many culturally significant observances celebrated by diverse communities across our state. Each holiday in some way reflects a relationship between people, history, culture, faith, and community.

At times these holidays arrive unexpectedly in the middle of busy working weeks, yet they are often welcomed as moments of reprieve from the daily rhythm of schedules, deadlines, and responsibilities. Their true value, however, is found when we embrace them intentionally – as opportunities to reconnect with family and friends, to rest, to reflect, and to remember the significance behind the occasion itself.

For example, on ANZAC Day we pause to honour and remember the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who served our nation. Scripture reminds us of the value of sacrificial love: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). Such days call us to gratitude, remembrance, and unity.

Schools, of course, experience an additional rhythm of holidays throughout April, July, and October. These breaks become important seasons for family time, Year 12 and tertiary study preparation, examinations, planning, recovery, and reflection for teachers and school administrators alike. They provide a valuable opportunity to rest, catch our breath, and consider all that has taken place during the term.

Within the Christian tradition, the liturgical calendar centres around two foundational celebrations: Christmas and Easter. The Christian year moves through seasons such as Advent, Lent, and Ordinary Time, tracing the life, death, resurrection, and ongoing work of Jesus Christ. At the heart of this calendar is the message of salvation – that God, in His grace, sent His Son into the world for humanity.

As John 3:16 declares:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

This truth represents the greatest relationship ever extended to humanity: God reaching toward us in love, grace, and redemption. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, and through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are invited into restored relationship with Him.

This is the relationship that Swan Christian Education Association (SCEA) and Swan Christian College (SCC) seek to reflect through the virtues of CHARIS – derived from the Greek word for grace, meaning the benevolent and undeserved favour of God. Grace is ultimately a gift freely given.

As we celebrate public and religious holidays – these gifts of time within our busy lives – may we also reflect on the eternal gift found in God’s act of grace. In seasons of rest, remembrance, celebration, and reflection, may we be reminded not only of the importance of relationships with one another, but also of the enduring relationship God offers to each of us.
