The Year 8 Discovery Days are aimed at Indigenous Year 8 students from across the Perth metropolitan area. Two of our students had the opportunity to visit the University of WA.
The students visited the UWA Campus for one day and participated in a range of hands-on activities that showcased a variety of study areas across the University.
They also met current Indigenous university students and staff from the School of Indigenous Studies, who share their experiences. Morning tea and lunch was provided as well as a t-shirt and some giveaways for the most involved students.
Our students met with two graduating Indigenous Doctors who showed them how to plaster a broken arm, then sat with them during a time of question and answer. Next was a visit to the Science lab to extract DNA from a strawberry. The final session was in the Sports Science and Health area where students where speed and strength tested. By the end of the day new friendships were made and the possibility of university life was less daunting.
