Will the Real Christmas Please Step Forward?

December marks the beginning of the Christmas season – although in many stores it seems to begin much earlier. Decorations appear almost overnight, gifts fill the shelves, and everywhere we turn, the sparkle of tinsel and glitter demands our attention. The advertising is relentless, the imagery of Santa is prolific, and our children are understandably captivated by the colour, excitement, and promise of gifts.

And yet, in the midst of all this seasonal splendour, we risk overlooking the true light of Christmas – the story at the very heart of our celebration. Where is the shining message of the Christmas whose origins lie in the birth of the Son of God? The birth of Jesus, who came as the Saviour of humankind, a people prone to turning away from God, desperately in need of a pathway back into a relationship with Him. Too often, this Christmas – the real Christmas – is hidden behind the glamour of decorations, festivities, and commercial activity.

There is a paradox here. The hope that comes with the birth of Jesus cannot be found in the veneer of Santa, the sleigh, or majestic reindeer. These traditions delight us, and many families enjoy them – and there is nothing inherently wrong with that. But perhaps the real question is this: can the true Christmas at least be given room to step forward?

The remarkable story of Jesus’ birth – one of sacrifice, joy, grace, and love – is powerful. Yet it is easily overwhelmed by the hype of chimneys, red suits, and an ever-growing pile of presents. Tragically, when this happens, the enduring hope that Jesus brings can also be lost among the noise.

So this Christmas, as you shop for gifts, visit Santa at the local store, place cookies and milk by the tree, and hang up the decorations, may you also look beyond the tinsel and the glitter. Look through the noise and the novelty to see Jesus – the true centre of Christmas.

The excitement of the season will fade, as it always does. But the hope that Jesus offers – the hope of salvation, reconciliation, and a restored relationship with our Father – is everlasting. It is this hope that satisfies long after the wrapping paper has been cleared away.

May the real Christmas step forward in our hearts and homes this year.

If you and your family would like to celebrate Christmas with others in the community and turn your attention to Jesus, you are welcome to attend Christmas services and events hosted by local churches. We wish you and your family a meaningful Christmas as you celebrate the birth of Jesus this year.
