In July, 18 students and three staff members will be travelling to the Kalgoorlie/Coolgardie region to work with the CAPS school (Christian Aboriginal Parent Controlled Schools) on the first Indigenous Impact Trip for 2017.

CAPS was established 36 years ago and provides Christian education to Aboriginal students from all over Western Australia. This trip will give students the opportunity to:

  • work alongside the Aboriginal students
  • share in some of their classes
  • tutor younger students
  • conduct a service project
  • participate in games and sporting activities
  • attend an Aboriginal church
  • visit Kalgoorlie town sites and visit the Kalgoorlie Gold Mine Super Pit
  • go bush to hear stories of the history of Christian missions from an Aboriginal elder.

Many, non-indigenous Australians have never had the opportunity to meet or have a meaningful conversation with an Aboriginal person, let alone spend a whole week building friendships with them. This trip will take students out of their comfort zone (in a good way) as they face new and exciting challenges. They will learn a lot about themselves and the world around them as they serve alongside their fellow Australians.

The trip is available for Year 9-11 students to apply. The cost is $800. Expression of Interest forms are available from Student Services. For more information please contact me on 9374 8300.
