The Swan Christian College Senior School Wellbeing program is a vital aspect of the educational experience. As a faith-based institution, we understand the importance of providing spiritual guidance and support to our adolescent students.

Our chaplains and psychologists are trained professionals who are equipped to offer counselling, mentorship, and pastoral care to any student who seeks it within Junior or Senior School. They are responsive listeners who offer a caring ear to those in need and create a safe and confidential environment for students to discuss any issues or challenges they may be facing.

The program also offers opportunities for students to engage in spiritual exploration, reflection, and growth, through  faith-based classroom activities and Christian Living classes in Senior School. . The Wellbeing program is one of the many ways that our school is committed to the holistic well-being of our students, and we are proud to offer it as an integral part of our educational community.

Swan Christian College works diligently to create a safe and nurturing environment that provides students the opportunity to flourish. All staff members provide pastoral care and ensure the provision of proactive and reactive support measures address the holistic wellbeing of each student.

Understanding our place in creation cannot be achieved without acknowledging that we are beings created in God’s image. The most essential question a person can seek to answer is therefore not ‘who am I?’ or ‘what am I?’, but ‘whose am I?’.

The Bible affirms each of the following elements in our understanding of humanity, which together form the basis of all wellbeing programs at Swan Christian College.

We understand people to be:

  • Physical – we have physical bodies that need nurturing, strengthening and training.
  • Emotional – we are psychological beings with high levels of self-awareness. Our emotional experiences are just as real as our physical ones.
  • Social – we are members of social networks of varying complexity and require positive, encouraging and supportive relationships.
  • Mental – we have the faculties and intellectual capacity for growth and creativity.
  • Spiritual – we have a fundamental need for relationship with God, the source of true life.

Our goal is that every student will have at least one adult at the College that they can connect to and build a positive relationship with, so that if things do go wrong, they have someone they can talk to.

Senior School

The Mentor Group and Mentor Teacher are important elements of stability and support for students. Deans of Year have oversight of pastoral care for each year group in the Senior School, as students continue to meet daily with their Mentor Group and Mentor Teacher.

The Dean of Year will listen, encourage and support students on their journey through Senior School. Using a coaching philosophy, they inspire and empower the students to take responsibility for their own decisions and together with the Educational Support Coordinator, Senior School Chaplain and College Psychologist, ensure that every individual student is provided with the highest level of support.

A specialist group of staff are specifically chosen to work with the Dean of Year 7 to assist students in their significant year of transition into the secondary years.

Our wellbeing program Living Well focuses on our students’ holistic development, beyond the traditional core curriculum. The program includes peer support, team building, leadership and resilience training, online safety and mental health education. The aim of the program is to equip students to flourish and achieve outstanding results, during their schooling life and beyond.

The program encourages mindfulness, exercise, and other stress-busting strategies, while also providing additional mental health resources and information for parents to access as they help their children through the rapidly changing social fabric and the stresses of teenage years.

The Living Well program delivers strategies and a better understanding of our changing world to our students and will actively focus on preparing our students for life beyond school. Workshops for students and parents with quality specialist facilitators will be made available and our College and camp programs will include opportunities to develop resilience, confidence and life skills.

Swan Christian College offers a variety of creative subjects and extracurricular opportunities in the Arts.

The Music Department at Swan Christian College offers students the opportunity to explore a variety of creative experiences and forms of artistic expression while using and enjoying their God-given talents with each other and for the wider community. As well as selecting music as a class subject, students are welcome to join one of the College’s many performing ensembles appropriate for their skills and interests.

Instrumental lessons are available through the College on all the major instruments from our team of professional music tutors.

Middle School

In Years 7 and 8, students undertake a short course (Semester) of study enabling them to explore music. This includes studying music from a variety of styles, performing music using instruments such as piano, voice, guitar and percussion and learning about how music is structured. In Year 9,  students may select courses in Music that further develop their musicianship and knowledge of theory.

Senior School

In Year 10, students may select further courses in Music to continue to develop their musicianship and knowledge of theory.

In Years 11 and 12, students are offered General Music and ATAR Music. The courses are dictated by the authority, details of which can be found at https://senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au/syllabus-and-support-materials/arts/music. The Music courses encourage students to explore a range of musical experiences, developing their musical skills and understanding, and creative and expressive potential. In ATAR this is realised through a choice of one of three defined contexts: Western Art Music, Jazz, or Contemporary Music.

Extracurricular

Students may also participate in the variety of extracurricular activities offered at the College before, during and after school hours. These include Choirs, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Guitar Ensemble, Worship Band, Rock Bands, String Ensemble and Drum Corp.

The school performing ensembles perform regularly at school and community events.

Dancing brings joy and grows community; it is a creative outlet that uses music and movement. It increases activity levels, develops body awareness, and improves critical thinking. Students develop skills and creativity through the exploration of dance styles including Jazz, Hip Hop and Contemporary, and will explore and create their own dance choreography.

Dance in Senior School explores cultural dance styles from guest choreographers and expands student’s choreographic skills with increasing opportunities.

Co-Curricular Opportunities

The Dance Showcase

The Dance Showcase is the highlight of our Dance program where students present classwork and choreography developed throughout the year. Students are also invited to audition and perform dance items created outside of class to be included in the evening.

Dance Club

Dance club provides an exciting opportunity to be involved in the dance showcase if for some reason students were unable to choose Dance as a subject. It’s open to Year 7-12 students and is run during lunchtimes to prepare a piece or two for the showcase.

The Media Production and Analysis course at Swan Christian College provides students with an exciting and rewarding pathway to understanding the media. Through hands on learning and engaging investigation and research tasks, students become more informed both as viewers and producers.

Media and Society

The media plays an increasingly powerful role in our society, so it is important that we teach young people how to respond critically to the messages it presents. Through the course students gain a strong understanding of visual storytelling and have the opportunity to create compelling media that addresses important issues. Topics that have been addressed in student work include poverty (A Cambodian Story), homelessness (Struggle For Existence), and self-image (Priceless). Many artistic and humorous pieces of work can be produced including music videos, news stories, short films and documentaries.

Accolades

Our students have gained many accolades from the outside community including winning a prestigious WA Screen Award (finalists in the secondary school category from 2007-2010), and winning multiple web design awards in the RAC Fame competition (2008-2010). Using industry standard equipment students consistently create professional quality work that has paved the way for many of them to go on to further study and employment in the media industry.

The Visual Arts course encourages students to express original ideas and feelings creatively through resolved artworks. Students are given a themed project brief each term and work in a progressive and explorative manner to produce a highly resolved unique artwork. Each project has a focus on a different media in order to build strength in a variety of technical skills and processes. Students use the elements and principles of design to develop aesthetic awareness and consider the purpose of meaning through a Christian perspective to make informed evaluations of art.

This is a course for students who are interested in creating, designing, researching, explaining and evaluating ideas for the glory of God. It is for students who choose to take a practical approach to coursework by developing their creative abilities in the creation and production of functional products based on the needs of the designer from a Christian perspective. The course themes investigate the concept of symbolic representation and how it can be used to signify the individual nature and personality God invests in each person He has created. Students are encouraged to consider the construction of meaning based on experiences in the world.

This course requires students to apply organisational skills in the production of a folio that is one of the key components for assessment. Students are encouraged to see the folio as personal resource that should be taken care of as God encourages us to care for others and our materials. Students are assessed on practical skills, creativity, and the information compiled in the folio through a number of key projects throughout the year. They are encouraged and asked to comment on the Christian perspective on the many social issues raised.

Why Drama?

Drama at Swan Christian College allows students to develop confidence and skills in collaboration, problem-solving, communication, and creativity, as well as engage in a variety of performance and develop presentation related skills. Our focus is to create a safe and rewarding environment for students to explore their God-given talents, or develop the confidence and soft skills they will need in their future endeavours.

Initially, students are introduced to elementary skills with a focus on full participation in a safe and supportive environment. As they develop in confidence and age, they participate in public showcases, and begin devising their own work, allowing for exploration in writing, improvisation, teamwork, organisation, and design.

In Years 11 and 12, Drama is offered in accordance with the government syllabus for ATAR or General, which can be found at https://senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au/syllabus-and-support-materials/arts/drama.

Outside of the classroom, Swan offers many opportunities for students to extend their skills and enjoy the exhilaration of performance through Fenceline Theatre productions. Please follow this link for more information https://www.fencelinetheatrecompany.com.au

Senior Drum Corp

The Drum Corps is one of our dynamic ensemble groups. It enables students to explore the art of playing together different rhythmic patterns on a variety of drums. The ensemble is designed for students who love rhythm, beginners and rhythmically competent students. Students will be given an opportunity to play a range of popular rhythmic patterns, often experimenting with different styles to create a unique performance work. The Drum Corps performs at special College functions, Awards Night and at the Valedictory Dinner. In the past they have performed at the Oil and Gas Conference and with the Wanneroo Pipe Band.

The Senior Drum Corps rehearses on Wednesday Mornings, 7:45-8:45am.

Senior Concert Band

The Concert Band is one of the staple bands at Swan Christian College. It aims to develop the fine tone, musicianship and ensemble skills that are required to create a ‘mint’ ensemble. Students at different year levels, (including special dispensation Year 6 students), who play a woodwind, brass, guitar, bass guitar, keyboard or percussion instruments are encouraged to come along and are welcome to join at any time.

The band explores playing a variety of styles, including theme songs from film and stage shows, to excerpts from symphonic pieces and arrangements of rock and popular music. The aim is to meet the needs of different music skill levels and students will develop their confidence very quickly.

The Senior Concert Band rehearses on Wednesday Afternoons, 3:30-4:30pm.

Jazz Band

This talented group of musicians who enjoy ‘all that jazz’ as their main repertoire have fun exploring other sub-genres, jazz standards, jazz fusion, cool jazz, swing and some hard be-bop, because as jazz artists they are constantly improvising and looking for ways to expand the sounds and rhythms of jazz. Performance is the name of their game. If you have a flair for improvising and can play a jazz instrument, come along!

We encourage students who have experience playing the piano, drums, guitar, bass guitar, saxophone, trombone, trumpet and even a woodwind instrument to meet with our Jazz band conductor.  The Jazz band has many opportunities to perform both in school, and in the community throughout the year.

The Jazz Band rehearses on Thursday Afternoons, 3:30-4:30pm.

Senior String Ensemble

The Senior String Ensemble comprises the many talented string players from across the senior school campus. This group not only rehearses and performs diligently throughout the school year for numerous school events, it is also a springboard to young string players into external string communities such as the dynamic and well-known Western Australian Youth Orchestra (WAYO). To take part in the Senior String Ensemble, it is necessary to have a solid knowledge and practical skill on your chosen string instrument: violin, viola, or cello. Double basses are also welcome!

The Senior String Ensemble rehearses on Friday Mornings, 7:45-8:45am.

Swan Song

This is a vocal ensemble for all Senior School students who would like to give singing in a group a try. We work on repertoire that is fun and exciting, but also provide a challenge as we endeavour to add some harmonies and counterpoint and sing in a wide variety of styles. We sing contemporary songs that can be heard on the radio alongside songs that have a ‘contemporary worship’ or hymnal background style as well as beautiful classics. All students are invited to participate.

The Swan Song Choir rehearses on Friday Mornings, 8:00-8:45am.

Praise Crew

The Praise Crew is the Senior School Worship Band, performing contemporary Christian music for Year 7/8 Worship Services, bi-termly. This band practise contemporary Christian music, as well as band member choices to hone their personal instrumental and group band skills throughout the year. The more people, the bigger the sound! The Praise Crew look for piano players, guitar and bass guitarists, drummers, all front-line instruments, and vocalists. Pop in, join up, and have fun bringing music to the school and to our God!

The Praise Crew rehearses on Tuesday Mornings, 8:00-8:45am.

The modern study of English is the study of language and how it works. ‘Story’ is the backbone of much of what we do. Stories help us understand who we are and how we fit into our world.

The English curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands of Language, Literature and Literacy. Together, the strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in speaking and listening, reading, writing and viewing. Learning in English builds on concepts, skills and processes in these areas.

In the Senior years, courses offered included Foundation, General, ATAR English and Literature. All courses, to varying degrees, focus on developing student’s analytical, creative, critical thinking and communication skills, encouraging students to critically engage with a variety of texts.

The Health and Physical Education program exposes students to a wide range of experiences that will encourage them to make lifelong a commitments  to leading a healthy and active lifestyle.

Students who continue with Japanese or French in Year 11 and 12 are able to complete the TAFE Certificate III in Applied Languages as well as use Japanese or French to contribute to their ATAR. In Years 9 to 12, students study Languages four hours per week throughout the year.

The Mathematics Department offers many appropriate levels of courses in Mathematics subjects from Year 7 to 12. It is a major priority in
Mathematics to choose the most appropriate level for each student, giving them the best opportunity to maximise their possibility for success at that level. Confidence for any student is essential for success.

Opportunity for Success

Years 7 – 10

In Years 7-10, Mathematics is compulsory and is taught at three distinct levels – Extension, Advanced, Standard, General and Boost. Each level is based on the success criteria outlined in the WA Curriculum. The Extension level is an opportunity for gifted and talented students to go deeper
into the Curriculum and the General and Boost levels exist to support students who are struggling with the Standard content and need extra help.

Every effort is made to place each student in the appropriate level after studying their previous results. As far as possible, we provide the opportunity for students to move between levels as we observe what we believe is in the best interest of the individual students.

Assessment

Assessment of student progress is done through three formats. Response tasks (tests), examinations (Yr 8 to 12) and investigative tasks. Investigative tasks encourage students to explore mathematics using the Mathematical Thinking Process or Statistical Investigative Process.

Years 11 and 12

In Years 11 and 12, there exists a wider choice of Mathematics courses of differing levels than those in Years 7-10. The courses offered in Year 11 and 12 are Mathematics Foundation, Mathematics Essential, Mathematics Applications, Mathematics Methods and Mathematics Specialist.

The Foundation course provides support for students still requiring to pass their OLNA numeracy assessment.

The Essential course involves solving problems in real contexts for a range of workplace, personal, further learning and community settings. The course provides the opportunity for students to prepare for post-school options of employment and further training.

The Applications course is for students who want to extend their mathematical skills, but whose future studies or employment pathways do not require knowledge of calculus. The course is designed for students who have a wide range of educational and employment aspirations, including continuing their studies at university or TAFE.

The Methods course is for students whose future pathways may involve mathematics, including calculus and statistics and their applications, in a range of disciplines at the tertiary level.

The Specialist course is to be studied in conjunction with the Mathematics Methods course as preparation for entry to specialised university courses such as engineering, physical sciences and mathematics.

Science is a body of empirical, theoretical, and practical knowledge about the natural world, gained through the observation, explanation, and prediction of real-world phenomena. It is a quest to uncover and explain our world and our experiences. Science at Swan Christian College is about exploring our world, close and afar, and applying the models and theories taught to everyday experiences. It develops curious thinkers and provides the tools that allow students to formulate ways to investigate the unknowns and satisfy their curiosities.

Year 7 – 10

Science is a compulsory subject in Year 7 to 10. Students are exposed to all elements of Science including Chemical, Physical, Biological and Earth and Space through engaging methods that address process, critical thinking, knowledge base and career opportunities. STEM activities are embedded within programs to give students a hands on application of content taught.

Students in Years 9 and 10 who are excelling may receive an opportunity to engage in an Extension Program exploring Science beyond the curriculum.

Year 11 and 12

A wide variety of Science course are available to students in Years 11 to 12 and students can elect these based on their interests, skillsets and career paths. These courses include ATAR Biology, ATAR and General Human Biology, ATAR Chemistry, ATAR Physics, ATAR Psychology and Science in Practice.

This area of study could be best described as a more practical dimension of education. A wide range of subjects is delivered including Graphic Design, Home Economics, Textiles, Child Studies, Food and Nutrition, Hospitality, Computing and ICT, Computer Aided Design, Engineering and Construction, Mechatronics, Multimedia, Metalwork and Woodwork.

The main thread that binds this diverse area together is an understanding of how we work practically to support the community that we live in. Skills are taught, but more importantly, where and how to use these skills to build the Kingdom of God is the underlying foundation.Design is a function of our creativity. We can be deeply satisfied in a creative process that solves problems requiring innovation and lateral thinking.

Design is a foundational pillar to the subjects in this Faculty. Developing a sophisticated understanding of how design makes the world a better place to live in is a transformational function of the practical subjects and a life-changing event for many of our students.

The VET program at Swan Christian College encompasses three main areas:

Work Skills

The Year 10 Work Experience Program and Careers classes provide students with opportunities to develop work skills while continuing with their education. Year 11 and 12 students can participate in Structured Workplace Learning through the Worklink program.

Training

Provides a broader range of VET related educational options through the introduction of Nationally Accredited Training Certificates into College teaching programs in Languages, Hospitality, Business Studies, Information Technology, and the extension of the school-based Pre-apprenticeship programs through the Swan Trade Training Centre.

Year 11 and 12 students further have the option to participate in the VETDSS program offered via the TAFE System.

Students also have access to psychometric testing through the College to assist in career planning.

Humanities and Social Sciences is the study of human behaviour and interaction in social, cultural, environmental, economic and political contexts. Humanities and Social Sciences has a historical and contemporary focus, from personal to global contexts, and considers opportunities and challenges for the future.

In the Western Australian Curriculum for Year 7-10, the Humanities and Social Sciences learning area comprises four subjects: Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business, Geography, and History.

By studying Humanities and Social Sciences, students will develop the ability to question; think critically; make decisions based on evidence; devise proposals for actions; and communicate effectively.

Thinking about, reflecting on, and responding to issues requires an understanding of the key historical, geographical, political, legal, economic, business and societal factors involved, and how these different factors interrelate.

The Humanities and Social Sciences subjects provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to develop a broad understanding of the world in which we live and how people can participate as active and informed citizens in the 21st century.

In Year 11 and 12 students have the option of further specialisation in both ATAR and General Courses. The ATAR level courses offered are Accounting and Finance, Economics, Geography, Politics and Law, and Modern History. Business Management and Enterprise is offered as a General Course and students can also pursue a Certificate IV in Business.

More in depth details on the specifics of each course can be found in the subject handbook.

The Workplace Learning program is open to Year 11 and Year 12 students. This subject provides opportunities for students to demonstrate, and develop increasing competence in, the core skills for work. They learn to apply and adapt the workplace skills that are necessary to understand and carry out different types of work.

Students are able to discover their strengths, interests and talents whilst learning about employer expectations and different industries through workplace learning.

It is an excellent opportunity for students to pursue areas of passion and interest that are not covered in the existing courses, develop their skills in these areas, and potentially create a portfolio that may lead to employment or further study.

More information is available in the Year 11 & 12 Subject Information Booklet.

Senior School Opportunities

Students are presented with a broad range of programs that provide an education with challenging opportunities, meet their needs, and develop them to become responsible contributors to the wider community.

The Senior School seeks to maximise the learning of each individual student, encouraging and assisting them to utilise their God-given talents and abilities in order to pursue future pathways. They are encouraged to be independent thinkers, make informed decisions, and take responsibility for their own actions as learners.

The Senior School offers a balanced experience of co-curricular programs inclusive of Sport, Creative and Performing Arts, Cultural and Academic tours to overseas countries and opportunities for community service both locally and internationally.

Study in the senior years is engaging and challenging, and the secure, well-structured learning environment at Swan Christian College provides a very sound basis for success. The strong pastoral care program provides a framework of encouragement that underpins the academic program, allowing students to step outside their comfort zone. In addition to the College psychologist, College counsellor and the Chaplain, each student is allocated a Mentor teacher. The Mentor teacher remains with their Mentor group through their senior school years; the Mentor teacher is also the point of contact for parent enquiries.

Our students have established a record of outstanding achievement in their studies, careers, sporting and cultural pursuits and service to the community. They are truly great ambassadors for the Senior School.
